How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor



The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions however the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c, even if I unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up).  audi q7 locked keys in car  must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly when you're looking at a Bosch sensor, like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your car. The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a standard component across the Audi 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards.
